Tree Spade Attachment for Small Tractors: What Acreage Owners Need to Know

If you’ve got trees you want to move and a compact tractor sitting in your yard, you’ve probably wondered: is that enough?
Most people assume you need a 50 to 100 horsepower machine to move a tree. It’s a reasonable assumption — commercial tree spades are big, heavy pieces of equipment built for large operations. But that assumption stops a lot of acreage owners and hobby farmers from ever getting started on projects they could absolutely handle themselves.
Here’s what’s actually true: if you have a compact tractor — 25 horsepower and up — you have enough to move trees. You just need the right equipment designed for it.
The Myth That Stops Most People
Walk into almost any conversation about tree moving and someone will say it: “You need a real tractor for that.”
It’s not entirely wrong — if you’re running equipment built for large machines. Traditional commercial tree spades are heavy, require significant hydraulics, and are designed for 60 to 100 HP equipment. Trying to run one on a small tractor would be a problem.
But that’s a tool problem, not a tractor problem.
The right tree spade attachment makes all the difference. The Kompact Tree Spade was designed from the ground up specifically for small tractors — not scaled down from a commercial unit, but built from day one with compact equipment in mind. That’s a completely different starting point, and it changes what’s possible.
What Can You Actually Move?
More than you’d think. Here’s a real-world picture:
- Jim from Ridgeville, ON transplanted approximately 130 trees — black locust, white pine, and spruce ranging from 5 to 12 feet tall — in hard clay soil using his Kioti tractor. Every one of them took.
- David from Port Burwell, ON moved 50 young trees across his property, calling it effortless: “Using the Kompact Tree Spade, I moved all 50 trees effortlessly and in remarkably little time.”
- A customer in British Columbia moved 150 hazelnut trees — in rocky soil that would have made hand digging nearly impossible. He and his wife ran the operation together. 100% survival rate. The trees were bearing nuts the following year.
Ontario to BC. Hard clay to rocky soil. These aren’t ideal lab conditions — these are real farms, real tractors, real results.
What Size Trees Can You Move?
The Kompact Tree Spade comes in two sizes:
- 26″ model — handles trees up to 2.75″ trunk diameter
- 36″ model — handles trees up to 3.75″ trunk diameter
Trunk diameter is your best indicator of whether a tree is within range. Most trees that acreage owners want to relocate — spruces, poplars, fruit trees, ornamentals — fall comfortably within those specs. And because it’s a purpose-built tree spade attachment for compact equipment, it mounts to your front-end loader forks without any modifications.
When Is the Best Time to Move Trees?
You actually have more options than most people realize. There are two solid windows every year:
Spring (March through May) — Roots are getting active and trees establish well heading into the growing season.
Fall (October through November) — Often just as good, sometimes better. Trees are going dormant, so they’re not fighting transplant shock and new growth at the same time. Less stress overall, and soil conditions are usually ideal.
The main thing to avoid is the extremes — deep frozen ground in winter and the peak heat of midsummer. Everything in between is workable. So whatever season is coming up next, there’s a good window ahead of you. In saying that, we have transplanted trees in the heat of midsummer and they have done well.
After transplanting, water the tree in well, mulch around the base to hold moisture, and stake anything large enough to catch wind. Simple aftercare goes a long way.
Does It Pay for Itself?
If you’ve ever priced out hiring a tree service, you already know the answer. Professional tree moving typically runs $500 to $1,500 per tree depending on size and access. The Kompact Tree Spade pays for itself after moving just 6 to 8 trees — and after that, every tree you move is money you keep.
But beyond the math, there’s something harder to put a number on: doing it on your schedule. When the weather is right and the window is open, you can act. No waiting on contractors. No per-tree cost making you think twice about a project.
